Hijab in Malaysia

I am constantly wondering why Malaysian girls, little girls, wear hijab. I am not trying to be offensive, but everywhere I look little girls as young as seven wear the hijab! I am not an Islamic scholar by any means, but from what I have read a girl needs to wear the hijab AFTER she becomes a woman.

“Abu Dawood narrates that `Aishah (RAA) said: “Asmaa’ the daughter of Abu Bakr (RAA) came to see the Messenger of Allah (SAAWS) wearing a thin dress; so Allah’s Messenger (SAAWS) turned away from her and said: O Asmaa’, once a woman reaches the age of menstruation, no part of her body should be seen but this-and he pointed to his face and hands.”

Based off of this Hadith references it shows there is a certain time when a young lady should begin covering. Therefore I am constantly curious why youngsters here wear hijab. Is it more cultural?! I have encountered Muslims from around the globe and never seen a society that has 5 year olds wear hijab.

I talked to two different scholars on the issue and they said maybe they want to teach their daughters to be conservative. I believe that is great, you should teach your daughters Islamic mannerisms. BUT, a big BUT, the hijab should be a choice made by the person wearing it. It shouldn’t be something that is forced. Let your daughters choose that they want to cover their beauty for Allah’s sake, not because it’s what they’ve done since they were five!

This is merely my personal opinion. As always you can oppose it or ask questions and leave comments.

  1. It’s easy to assume when we see little girls wearing hijab that they must’ve been told that they have to wear it by the parents, and that’s what I had assumed as well. Right up until I found out that my friend’s 3 year old daughter loves the hijab. Her mum actually worries for her but she insists on wearing it out to be more like her mum. It’s very sweet really. :) So it’s not always the case that the kids are told to wear it. Sometimes, they just take after the women around them. Lovely blog by the way!
